It all started 18 years ago when António while filing the forms to study Agronomics filled the wrong code and was placed in the Food Engineering course in the same university.
Joana, one year younger already had her choice made (raising horses) but in the family talks her father always said that they should never have jobs but have a WORK and that together they would be much more stronger.
Joana joins António at the Agronomics Institute with the goal to complement António’s course that was already in the studying enology. This way we would have a winemaker and a viticulturist.
During the course António worked as an intern in several wine regions such as Napa Valley – California (first Merryvale (2001) and Rudd Estate (2002), D’Arenberg, Austrália (2003) and later in France at the prestigious Chateau Lynch Bages in Bordeaux.
In 2004 with 23 years he returns to Portugal and starts his own wine production project along side the prestigious viticulturist David Booth. Joana was finishing her studies but went to help her brother. The first FitaPreta Vinhos harvest in Alentejo had to be perfect and Joana was perfect for the job.
That year revealed to be a success for the brothers with the International Wine Challenge Trophy awarded to their wine PRETA 2004.
Later in a conversation comes the idea to know better the technology of producing white wines. Joana goes to Australia to learn more at Haselgrove Wines - McLaren Vale.
With the success of their teamwork, many producers who where searching support building their wine projects start working with António and Joana. In 2006 they start the winemaking consultancy project WINEID.
Projects such as Quinta Sant´Ana in Lisbon, Project Cem Reis and Arrepiado Velho in the Alentejo, Cabrita Vinhos and João Clara in the Algarve.
In 2010 Joana sets off to the Douro Region to embrace a new consultancy project. The R4 Douro Family.
Getting to know the Douro region from the inside was a remarkable experience and in 2011 she finds the perfect vineyard! The first step was to call António and challenge him for the first 100% brother and sister project.
Maçanita Vinhos is the result of mixing the experience of two winemakers, brother and sister, lots of “discussions”, lots of fun, all resumed in a bottle of wine.
Today, the Maçanita Vinhos vineyards are distributed along the Douro 3 sub-regions. Baixo Corgo where you can find the Malvasia Fina, Viosinho and the Gouveio. In the Douro Superior the Códega do Larinho. The red grapes are in the Cima Corgo region, close to Pinhão. There you can find the Touriga Nacional, Sousão and old vineyards with more than 80 years old
Our wines are the reflex of the Douro terroir and express the character of both brothers.
Along the years both brothers produced distinguished and acknowledged wines by some of the best wine critics and wine contests in the world.
António’s irreverence is well known. In the Azores recovered the TERRANTEZ DO PICO an almost extinct indigenous grape varietal and created a new company. The Azores Wine Company that produces high quality wines and replaced the Azores wine region as one of the best Portugal has to offer.
António’s work paid off by having 7 Azorean wines and 8 Alentejo wines above 90 points (out of 100) in on of the most prestigious wine critics – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Joana’s perseverance and involvement in all projects she’s been working is paying off! The rebirth of the Algarve wines once forgotten. Consecutive years of national and international acknowledgement with gold medals at the International Wine Challenge and Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
She also worked hard to recover indigenous grapes such as the red grape Negra Mole and the white grape Crato revealing all its potential and having no fear of critics. Today, Joana works with 5 producers in the Algarve wine region.
Maçanita Vinhos is Joana and António most recent adventure and is already receiving awards such as:
• Maçanita Red 2011:
◦ Silver Medal - Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2013
◦ Gold Medal – Portuguese National Wine Contest 2013 - Portugal
• Maçanita Red 2012
◦ Grand Gold Medal – Portuguese National Wine Contest 2015 - Portugal
◦ Commended - International Wine Challenge 2014
◦ Bronze Medal – International Wine Challenge 2015

António and Joana will continue to surprise and show the best of it can be done in the Douro region.
